William Shakespeare
"The course of true love never did run smooth..."
Theseus (The Duke of Athens) and Hippolyta are preparing for their wedding when they are interrupted by Egeus who is insisting his daughter, Hermia, marry Demetrius. But, Hermia and Lysander are in love and Hermia's best friend, Helena, is obsessed with Demetrius. Given the choice to marry Demetrius, become a nun, or die, Hermia and Lysander steal away into the woods.
In the woods, the King and Queen of the fairies are fighting and King Oberon wants revenge. In getting his revenge, mistakes are made and his servant, Puck, meddles with the love lives of Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander.
Also in the woods are a few townspeople rehearsing their play to be presented at the Duke's wedding. The play has all the makings of disaster, especially when the lead actor, Bottom, appears with a Donkey's head (courtesy of a joke played by Puck) and frightens all the other actors away.
Fairy King Oberon makes his Queen, Titania, fall in love with Bottom the donkey as his revenge...
One memorable night in the woods later, all is put to rights and it's time for the Duke's wedding and the "entertaining" performance of Pyramus and Thisbe.
